How are missing teeth replaced?

Replacement of a missing tooth has advanced from removable dentures to fixed dentures and quite recently to dental implants. The need of sufficient bone around the fixture is critical for the success of the implant.

What are the difficulties in placing conventional dental implants?

When there is an insufficient bone to place a regular implant fixture, it is not possible to restore the tooth unless advanced surgeries are performed over a period of 6- 12 months.

What are those advanced surgeries needed for conventional implant placement?

In the upper jaw posterior teeth region, the bone is filled with airspace called sinus lined by a membrane above the teeth roots. Patients requiring replacement of these teeth usually have much less bone and more of the sinus cavity. Conventional implants cannot be placed in this place without performing a procedure known as sinus lift.

Also, in the lower jaw when the patient requiring edentulous teeth replacement in the posterior region had remained edentulous for a long period, there will be gradual wear of bone (resorption) reducing the space between the bone and the lower jaw nerve. If conventional implants are to be placed in this region procedures known as nerve repositioning and bypassing nerve canal are to be done.

All these procedures require at least 6-12 months of gap between the surgery and implant placement to be completed.

All the patients cannot allocate so much time for their teeth replacement and also, all the patients may not be suitable candidates for these type of surgeries due to their general health condition or they cannot afford these treatments.

For the benefit of these type of patients a new type of implant system has been introduced known as the hybrid implant.

What is a hybrid implant?

A hybrid dental implant is a conjunction of a maxillofacial plate and screws with a regular implant body. These implants have emerged as an alternative to other dental implants when they cannot be placed or they fail to be accepted.

What are the indications of hybrid implants?

A Hybrid dental implant was aimed to manage such situations where there is an insufficient bone. Hybrid implant systems are especially indicated when the patients want immediate replacement of teeth even in compromised bone

What are the advantages of hybrid implants?

  • This implant system has the advantage of avoiding sinus lift, nerve damage and bone grafting.
  • Immediate delivery of Fixed prosthesis following placement of the  Hybrid Implant.
  • No need to wait for 3-6 month period for osseointegration as in the case with conventional dental implants.
  • Can be used in diabetics and smokers too.
Richardsons dental and craniofacial Hospital is providing treatment facilities for hybrid implants too. Implants candidates from Kerala can access our service easily since we are located at just 70 kms journey from Trivandrum (Thiruvananthapuram) Kerala.
