Dermoid Cyst - Lateral Canthus left eye.
A young lady came to our OPD at Richardsonsdental and craniofacial centre with a complaint of a swelling in her upper
eyelid of the left eye that was present since one year. The rest of her face was
also covered with multiple warts.
Dr.Sunil Richardson examined her upper
eyelid and found the swelling to be soft and mobile and about 7.7mm in
dimension. It was thought to be a dermoid cyst which is a swelling that is
benign and can only be treated by complete surgical removal.
Being a patient of epilepsy she was closely
monitored by the expert anaesthesiology team at the hospital throughout the
operation. The cyst was larger in dimension than what appeared clinically. It was
removed as a whole and no residual portions were left behind. She came back
after a week for suture removal and the swelling has subsided. The biopsy report
confirmed our provisional diagnosis of dermoid cyst. There is minimal fear of
recurrence.
Such cysts can arise in part of the face,
like upper or lower eyelids, in the mouth on the cheeks or below the tongue,
behind the ear, on the forehead etc. At Richardsons dental and craniofacialcentre such cases are regularly treated and cured.
